For the last few weeks, there has been a constant debate about whether or not the new US Online Poker Room Skill Bet is a legal form of poker. Skill bet has taken an original approach to how their poker games work. With the way their games work, they argue that only the poker players skill changes the outcomes, and therofore it is a 100% skill based game.

How Does Skill Bet Work?
You and your Opponent are dealt the same cards at identical tables. You both play against the same computer players. The only factors that determine
who wins are the players’ decisions. This makes it a game of skill and 100% legal!
Skill Bet Has Two Versions of Games
Skillbet Challenge – In a SkillBet Challenge, you and your opponent play 30 hands and whoever has the most tokens at the end wins the whole Buy-In amount! You can play against any friend (or foe) even if they are not looged in!
You can challenge a friend via email, facebook, or Twitter. You play the 30 hands, and then, your opponent has 24 hours to complete the challenge (i.e., play the exact 30 hands against the exact same computer players).
When your friend logs in they will see your challenge at the top of their lobby. If you challenge a friend who is new to SkillBet to a game of 10 $Tokens or more, then the winner of the challenge will receive a 100 $Token bonus! Alternatively, you can just click on play now in the lobby and we will match you.
Skillbet Live - Play, chat and compete in realtime! If you win 20 $Tokens on a hand and your opponent only wins 15 $Tokens (with the same hand facing the same computer players), then your opponent owes you 5 $Tokens.
You play a minimum of 30 hands and during these 30 hands you cannot win or lose more than your Buy-In. For example, if you play a 30 $Token SkillBet Live game, then during that game you cannot win or lose more than 30. At the end of the 30 hand game, you can continue on a hand by hand basis (stopping whenever you like).
Why It’s Legal
According to federal statutes and the statutes of most US states, gambling is defined as: risking something of value upon the outcome of a contest of chance.
We offer games of skill only. Our first game is like regular No Limit Texas Hold’em without the luck of the draw (e.g., both players play the same hand against the same opponents). The only factor determining who wins are the decision of the two players – and therefore, it is unquestionably a game of skill.
Our games are no different from carnival games, chess and golf tournaments or other skill-based games that have been played for cash or prizes for hundreds of years. Our legal opinion was provided by Marc Zwillinger, a Harvard lawyer who was previously the head of internet gaming enforcement for the US Department of Justice.
Four other lawyers favorably assessed the legality of SkillBet.com and one (a Partner at one of the largest and oldest law firms in the world) is now an investor in the Company. Participation is restricted to individuals 18 years or older in specified jurisdictions – please see our Terms and Conditions for full details.
